Web3-enabled fantasy sports platform Sorare has centralized some functions at its Paris headquarters, leading to the layoff of 22 employees in its New York office, with an additional 11 asked to relocate to Paris. The company aims to enhance communication and efficiency by bringing certain teams together in one location. Despite the layoffs, Sorare will maintain operations in New York for teams working with U.S. customers and partnerships with leagues like MLB and NBA. The layoffs were not driven by finances, but due to the company’s extended timeline for achieving growth goals in the web3 sector.

Sorare continues to allow users to trade NFT cards on its platform, with the majority of its revenue coming from the issuance and sale of new cards. Although the company experienced $200 million in user transaction volume in 2023, it has not disclosed its profitability. Sorare last raised capital in a $680 million Series B round in 2021. The web3 sector, including web3 gaming, has faced challenges attracting investor interest, with funding declining significantly in 2023.

While other web3 gaming startups have struggled and undergone layoffs, Sorare, with an active community and media presence, aims to navigate successfully through any challenges ahead.
