Google is gearing up for the release of the Pixel Fold, its own foldable smartphone that will challenge Samsung’s current dominance in the market. The device has a wider frame, more like a passport, and is designed to be used with its outer display as often as possible, due to the fact that most interactions with a phone are under two minutes. When designing for foldables, Google has to consider continuity and posture detection in order to maintain user experience during long sessions and the device’s optimal orientation. Google’s focus on form factor when creating the Pixel Fold is to make sure it remains a feasible daily driver, keeping it thin (less than 6mm) while still allowing for sophisticated components such as 5x optical zoom. The device unlocks some new use cases thanks to its posture detection, such as a dual-screen interpreter mode that has a different language translate on each display. To ensure app makers are able to optimise for foldable devices, Google is set to launch new developer tools, guidelines and easy-to-use libraries.
サムスンがリリースしたGalaxy Fold以降、折り曲げ可能な大型スマートフォンでの独占状態が続く中、Googleは今月後半にリリース予定の「Pixel Fold」で市場に参入する。Googleは、Galaxy Z Fold 4を参考にするだけでなく、異なる設計で参入するために尽力している。Pixel FoldプロダクトマネージャーであるGeorge Hwang氏によると、外部ディスプレイに重点を置いたデザインで、絞込み及び表示される情報を可用性良くすることに重点を置いているという。Pixel Foldは、即時適応感のある有用な外部ディスプレイを採用しており、Galaxy Z Fold 4のような長くて細い筒状のシャーシを採用していないため、ユーザーはより普通のスマートフォン感覚で利用できるという。
Pixel Foldの内部ディスプレイによる緻密な多目的利用もGoogleの設計目標から欠かすことができない。GoogleのアンドロイドプラットフォームチームのAndrea Zvinakis氏によると、Pixel Foldの継続性と姿勢の維持が非常に重要である。たとえば、表面に配置されたボタンの配置、たたき込み機能等があげられる。姿勢検出は、デバイスの向きに応じてカメラやUIの動きや振る舞いを予測することが重要であり、デュアルシェードのような新機能を搭載し、他の一般的なスマホと異なる独特な利用方法ができる。Pixel Foldは、開発者のより適合性の高い、進化しているソフトウェア向け機能の新しいリソースを提供する役割も負っている。
