Hardware prototyping consultant Ken Pillonel made a project to swap the Lightning port of AirPods Max for USB-C to showcase repairability and sustainability issues found in consumer electronics. This project is a response to complaints from users about the headphones still using Lightning for charging while other Apple devices have transitioned to USB-C. The custom replacement part allows technically skilled users to change their AirPods Max to USB-C without complex modifications. The part avoids contact with other components and has a flexible section to reduce stress on the connector for better durability. Even though audio pass-through via USB-C was considered, it was excluded due to cost and complexity. The conversion kit, including instructions, is available for purchase on Pillonel’s online store. The next AirPods Max version, rumored to debut in late 2024, will feature a USB-C port. This upgrade might not involve significant changes apart from the new port and possibly new colors, missing out on other features like the H2 chip and Adaptive Audio.
